Reverse osmosis is a membrane separation operation that uses a pressure difference as a driving force to separate a solvent from a solution. When pressure is applied to the solution on one side of the membrane, when the pressure exceeds its osmotic pressure, the solvent will reverse osmosis against the direction of natural osmosis.Thereby, the permeated solvent, that is, the permeate, is obtained on the low-pressure side of the membrane;the concentrated solution, is obtained on the high-pressure side. The reverse osmosis membrane can remove 99.5% of the salt, and is often used in the desalination of municipal tap water, groundwater,brackish water, seawater, etc. Compared with other purification processes, the reverse osmosis device can producehigh-quality water at low cost.
